Schweitzer's Message For Young People
When Dr. Schweitzer visited the Silcoates School in Yorkshire England in the mid-1930’s he spoke on ‘The Meaning of Ideals in Life’ to the students. The following two quotes are from that address:
“I want to speak to you about yourselves, about the path you are going to seek in life. You must have all kinds of knowledge for life and you should carry away with you from this school the necessary knowledge; but you must also carry away thoughts with you. It is life itself that will examine you and it is life that will ask you: have you profited from your youth; are you carrying with you the necessary idealism?”
“Our hearts often look for something very big, something wanting a lot of sacrifice, and often our heart does not see the humble things. At first you must learn to do the humble things and often they are the most difficult to do.”
The Dr. Schweitzer Hospital Fund is keen to provide support in any way it can to teachers and pupils engaged in projects which might involve Dr. Schweitzer’s life and work, thought and philosophy.
The secretary Mrs.Vreni Mark, will do her best to respond to any contact or request for information and can make some printed material available or arrange a talk with people, who have known and worked with Albert Schweitzer in Africa.
A small colour illustrated hard-back book in the series: ‘People who have helped the world’, telling the story of Dr. Schweitzer’s life and work is available for purchase, price £3.00 (incl.p+p).
Numerous talks, sermons and articles can be supplied free, including material for school projects. A set of slides with accompanying English commentary text can be borrowed, as can some English and French videos.
